Today we ran the very first session of our Freedom to Make project. This 8 week textile project is part of our year long wider project called Freedom to Be, exploring freedom in a series of collaborative workshops. Artists Beth Hopkins and Alejandra Picco started us off with an introduction to their own works, with fascinating and personal insights into how textiles have helped them cope with their mental health difficulties, as well as Alejandra’s experience of IVF treatment.
Throughout the next 8 weeks we’ll be trying out lots of different textile methods, from stitching and crochet to shibori fabric dyeing. To get started though everyone stitched their own name badges, so we could start to get to know each other as a group.
We’re really excited about this project which is made by possible by the National Lottery Community Fund.
